Discover what there is for clients to learn about themselves by pausing at the threshold of a change. A doorway, a foot bridge, a gate… a metaphoric marker that divides two spaces contains a wealth of information.
There is unique wisdom in this space that is rich with the potential to both thwart and support change. Poised between the past and the future, the moment may hold fear and determination, regret and anticipation, a pulling back and the energy to move forward.
You will learn a script-based activity you can easily do with your clients that will deepen their self-exploration and enable them to identify and address what holds them back and to help build motivation for what lies ahead.
Appropriate for those with or without previous training in Clean Language.
There’s Gold in Them Metaphors!
Use Clean Language questions to help your clients get clear about their thoughts and plans, and they will be amazed at how empowered they feel. Ask them the same questions about their metaphors, and you strike gold! Because the metaphors are the keys to their inner worlds, where how they respond to the world each and every day gets determined.
You will get to experience your own inner resourceful metaphors, the ones you use to embody feelings you find helpful, like confidence, focus, and calm. The experience will give you insight as to what you can help your clients access and what techniques make for effective facilitating of this experiential process. Learn some Clean Language tools to help your clients access and strengthen their resourceful feelings.
Discover how working with metaphors can be a game changer!
Yes, but…
Untangling Problems and Outcomes for Greater Effectiveness
As we grow up, we are often taught to solve problems by thinking and learning more about them, so it’s no wonder clients tend to focus their attention on what they don’t want or like. It can be challenging to redirect their attention to their desired outcomes. It can be even more difficult to determine which problems need to be included in the solution and which should be set aside.
In these skill-building lessons, you will learn Clean Language questions and strategies that address both issues. Learn how to empower your client to recognize their own unproductive patterns and chart new paths for greater success.
Appropriate for those who are new to Clean Language and for those with beginner level Clean Language skills.

Facilitate Self-Exploration with Clean Language as Your Client Draws
Innovative psychotherapist and coach David Grove described a page or objects in the act of being created by clients as “psychoactive” when they are actively engaged with these portraits of their inner experiences. Ask ordinary questions of your clients as they create, and you are likely to interrupt their connection with their subconscious knowing. Instead, they search their conscious, cognitive awareness for answers. To address this problem, Grove developed Clean Language, carefully worded questions using a clients’ exact words to elicit their subconscious, internalized metaphors and deepen their self-directed exploration. Hidden blocks and maladaptive strategies are rapidly revealed, while inner resources are strengthened when working at the metaphoric level.
In this course, you will learn some basic Clean Language facilitation questions and strategies for directing your clients’ attention to deepen their experience AS they make art. For trainees new to Clean Language, it’s a great introduction, and you will gain some powerfully effective ways to get clients connected with their subconscious knowing easily and early in their session.
For trainees who have taken the Intro to Clean Language course(s), this course gives you an opportunity to refresh and practice your most basic Clean Language questions and skills. If you really responded to the work we did in Parts One and Two with client drawings, you will appreciate learning a few new Clean Language questions and two of the Emergent Knowledge processes that David Grove experimented with late in his life– Clean Boundaries and Clean Hieroglyphics.
Whether you’re an art therapist who regularly engages with clients and their art work or a helping professional who likes having this versatile tool in your tool box for the right client at the right moment, being able to work with the metaphors always in view for both you and the client has unique advantages.
Training runs 9:30am-4:30pm for 2 days.
Class size limited to 12.
